We all know that too much makeup can be bad for you… Only if you don’t clean it properly! However, some have debated over using waterproof mascara and its effect on lashes. But is waterproof mascara bad for your lashes?
I can say that while it won’t burn your lashes off, there are some precautions to take!
Is Waterproof Mascara Bad For Your Lashes?
Waterproof mascara is a lifesaver since it keeps my makeup from running down my face during hot days. It’s more resistant than the typical mascara, creating even better protection for eyelashes. With waxes and silicone, it’s resistant to tears, sweat, water, and other liquids.
While beneficial to keep your look for the day, it has its disadvantages for your lashes as well.
For starters, it contains ingredients like Cyclopentasiloxane and isododecane, which makes it water-resistant but also can dry out your lashes.
Unfortunately, it can also be tough to remove, which makes your lashes more prone to damage and drying out. Using soap and water doesn’t cut it, and even regular makeup removers won’t be able to completely remove the waterproof mascara! This causes harm to both your skin and lashes, especially because you tend to tug and pull your lashes as an attempt to remove the mascara.
For those who sleep with their waterproof mascara on, the more disadvantageous it will be for your lashes. Not only does it smear around your eyes when you move around while sleeping, but it also irritates the eyes and damages the lashes, as it absorbs the product and weakens more.
But as long as you know how to remove waterproof mascara gently and do NOT sleep with it, it won’t cause extreme negative effects to your lashes. Besides this, I recommend that you only apply waterproof mascara during the summer and rainy months rather than every day. This keeps your lashes healthy and prevents it from weakening too much.

Removing Waterproof Mascara
Removing waterproof mascara doesn’t have to be so tedious and painful! Here are some quick tips to take it out gently:
- Use coconut oil to melt mascara and soften your eye makeup
- Use makeup removers made for waterproof makeup, specifically those with oil in its formula and without any alcohol
- Do NOT rub or pull out your lashes to remove the lashes. Rather, be more gentle and slow. While it will take more time, it’s better than removing lashes and causing pain or discomfort around your eyes!
Wrapping It Up
Waterproof mascara is a great product to keep your lashes looking amazing without the risk of it messing up. As long as you apply and clean it off correctly, you won’t have to worry about it ruining your eyelashes.
